The 'Laptop Care Basics for Dummies' Module Is Here!
Okay! Okay! The headline is a bit much. But we had to get your attention.
After all, you are personally responsible for what is handed over to you. Including data, laptops and storage devices.
Taking Care Of Company Laptops

We don't mean to school you, but company assets are as important as personal items. Treat them with care.
Here's a detailed check-list. Again, it's not something you don't know but well, tend to forget. Ergo, laptop care basics.

-
Your Laptops and Chargers are coded and come with a licensed and activated Windows & MS Office. Avoid using a charger that is not assigned to your laptop just because it's convenient. Also, using pirated software will lead to ping backs and / or software being blocked. License blocks would render the laptop unusable.
-
Avoid the use of company software and infrastructure for downloading data from non-secure websites. This can lead to trojan viruses and worse, lead to a data leak or your computer crashing. You are responsible for what you download, the sites you visit and where you download files from. Look out for pages that don't start with a HTTPS or have too many pop-ups.
-
While individual expression is cool, using permanent ink or non-removable stickers is not okay. So if you have do, do get stickers that can be easily peeled off. Should we need to handover a laptop to another colleague, we will of course need to be able to share it in a proper condition.
-
Don't carry a laptop by its screen (you'll be amazed how often that happens)
-
You'll want to hunt us down for this. But, keep your laptops clean. Regularly. Dust, dirt, moisture ain't friends.
-
Don't keep heavy items including books etc. on the laptop even if it is shut.
-
While working, do not place your laptop on uneven or unstable work area surfaces from which it could fall.
-
Keep Food, Drinks, and Liquids Away. It's common sense that electricity and water aren't a good combination.
-
Keeping a battery at 100% all the time will shorten its lifecycle.
-
Back Up data on your drive on a monthly basis.
-
What else can hurt your laptop? Let's see. Leaving things on the keyboard, jumping on it, using the laptop on unventilated surfaces, throwing the laptop around, exposure to dust and extreme temperatures, spilling coffee and or other important liquids. (We've seen it all!)
-
Lastly, do not keep multiple files and folders saved on your desktop as it slows the computer down. Cache and cookies should be cleared regularly as these use a lot of disk space on your computer and cause slow web browsing.

Damages due to negligence / loss or misplacement of company assets / not taking care can lead to a 'hit on your pocket' and we promise not to go there as long as you do your bit. Phew! We're done. If you think of more ways to take care of your laptop, do let us know!
